We've been blessed with quite a bit of rain over the off-season, and the Frio Canyon is busting out with wildflowers and greenery. The icing on the cake has been the 4+ inches of rain we received this week!

The Real County Sheriff's office called yesterday morning at 4am, letting us know that there was a 2 foot rise at the HEB camp. It's located north of Leakey about 10 miles, and is very near the headwaters of the Frio (East Prong). Sure enough, later yesterday afternoon, the River came down.
For those of you that are confused...that means the Frio came down to Leakey & Concan, causing a nice rise and great flow!

Sure is nice to finally have good news about our favorite place in the world!

Lots of rain overnight and today

Good news from the Frio River!
Rain, and quite a bit of it. About 2+ inches so far, and we may get more. But since we've been getting an inch here, an inch and a half there, this winter, the ground is finally getting wet. The result is that a lot of this rainfall is running off into the Frio and the creeks and drainages that feed our most favorite playpen.

We're not going to get too giddy yet and call this a 'drought-buster', cause it's not. But it's looking better here today than it has since the very rainy, oh-so-awesome year of '07. Remember '07...it was get in, and HANG ON!!

It's great to have something exciting to blog about. Hopefully the rains keep coming, cuz then my updates will be more frequent.

Can you imagine getting in right now? brrrrr!

Casa Bonita & Sparkling Frio

It's been awhile! Sometime back in November as I recall. Since then, nothin's happened.

Actually, we've had lots of cold weather, some much needed rains, wonderful Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays with family and friends, and good health.

But wait, you wanna know about the Frio, right? well...it's looking pretty good considering we've been in a drought for three out of the last four years. With less evaporation from the heat and the Cypress trees being dormant this time of the year, our Favorite River is holding it's own real well. Just picture it with a little more water in it than at any time you saw it in '09. My optimistic nature leads me to believe that sometime between now and summer, we'll get those big inches of H2o we've all been anticipating.

And speaking of the Frio River, we have added two new properties to the FrioMan Family of vacation homes...Casa Bonita, here in Concan, and Sparkling Frio, which is located just six miles north of Leakey. Both homes are located on beautiful, "droughtproof" stretches of the river, and are going to be extremely popular family vacation homes.

Sparkling Frio is situated on the Cypress lined banks of the east prong of the Frio River, just 6.5 miles north of Leakey off of US 83. A really cool house on a beautiful, quiet stretch of the Frio. Fish, swim, kayak, or just soak up the atmosphere in this serene setting. Sparkling Frio has 3 bedrooms, two baths , sleeps 14 guests (maximum) @ $425 per night.

Casa Bonita sits next door to Vista del Rio, one of our most popular vacation homes located directly on the Frio River. Under construction, this wonderful new 3 bedroom, 3 bath Hill Country home will have a 47" flat panel tv, loft with pool table, fireplace, and much, much more. It will accommodate a max of 20 guests, @ $550 per night. And it's small pet friendly!

And for some &*#%*!$$ area news. Even though we haven't been formally notified, the Uvalde county commisioners have voted to raise the occupancy tax that we collect from you!

It was at 0% last summer. Now it will be 4%, plus the 6% that goes to the State of Texas, for a grand total of 10%. Not good, but at least it's not back to the 12% that people paid for about 10 years.

Color changes, green grass, awesome weather, & Garner State Park

Wow! If you've never been to the Frio Canyon and surrounding areas in the fall, you're missing it. The trees are putting on their brilliant colors, the grass is green and lush from recent rains, and the weather is AHH-some!

Gigi, Maddie, and I took a leisurely drive yesterday, down to the Frio above Neal's campground, and then on to GSP.

The water is probably a little too cool to swim or tube in for most, but just being there is so peaceful.

This weekend we're going to the Utopia Fall Art Fair.

44th Annual Utopia Fall Arts Fair - (Saturday November 7, 2009 9 am - 4 pm) Town Square, FM 187 in Utopia, Texas. There will be over 70 vendors of handmade arts & crafts plus music, food, craft demonstrations, and a silent auction to benefit local scholarships.

On November 28, Christmas on the square will be held at the courthouse square in Leakey, from 9am til 4pm. Santa Claus will be there for the kids from 10-noon, and again from 1-3. It's fun, we'll be there.

Come on, it's not ever too long of a drive to experience this. And the best part, no crowds!

We saw lots of deer and squirrels, a couple of the park folks, and a few campers.

Green is good! The 5 or 6 inches of rain we received in late September and October really revived the flora and fauna.

Oh, and we did see a few buzzards upriver from Rock Beach

You can still do the GSP dance thing after summer's over, but ya gotta bring your own music.

Well, what I'm trying to say is, you really need to come see us!

We're so thankful that we live in such a beautiful area, and can just hop in the truck and be at these spots in mere minutes. We hope you enjoy these pictures, and that they see you through the long off-season until your next trip to the Frio River.

Next trip, Lost Maples Natural Area outside of Vanderpool. The Bigtooth Maples, Lacy Oaks, and many other trees are beginning to turn colors. Another great place close by to hike and enjoy nature.

A little at a time

Well, it started raining again yesterday a.m., dropping around an inch here in Concan. Very light rain fell all night, and is still coming down slowly now. Although it won't bring the level of the Frio up right away, it's a great start to what we hope is a real, wet winter.

The Canyon is really greenin up now, and is looking great! As I "pen" this post, it is a cool 60 degrees out, a welcome relief from the 100+ temps many of us experienced all summer. But that's basically just normal Texas weather, right? The down side is jeans & shoes vs shorts & flip flops.

Just about got IMac figured out, so I oughtta be postin pics here again soon. In the meantime, just add FrioMan InConcan as a friend on Facebook for almost daily news and pictures from the Frio River area.

Hey Guys...RAIN

8/10ths the other night, then 3.3 inches last night! And more expected, still need it.

I went out earlier and took some pics(posted on facebook). The Frio is looking better than it has all year, and some of last year. We're fixin to go back out, cause Hondo called and said Bunk Falls is going pretty good. Looks like more water came down and the flow/level is coming up more!

Midsummer on the Frio River '09

Has it rained where you live? I miss it terribly.

So does this little girl I saw today across the road from West of the Frio,
one of our cool vacation homes.

Too low to tube, but we still got fishin!

And lots of strollers on the gravel bar....babies or beer carriers, hmmm.

Took a ride to Buchanan's after that, to check out Neal's swimmin hole, and man the wind started blowin like crazy.

Folks down there swimmin and layin out picked up and started flocking to their vehicles...

FAST!

But not everybody heard the howling winds, or saw the blowing dust and approaching storm.

Or, really cared.

Apparently they knew, as I, that it would pass by and miss us, as it usually does.
There's always tomorrow!

Since I don't have much to talk about due to the dry conditions we've been in for so long, I just don't post very often.

No Rain, little change

Hey Guys

I've been getting quite a few emails to post updates, but unfortunately, nothing exciting has happened to report. It's hot & dry, and the Frio is low and slow. But it's still clean & green, and visitors are having a great time.

Below are the best place to float or swim, as reported to us firsthand by our guests: Better get there early, especially on the weekends. These are all pay to play, so don't trespass.

Happy Hollow-just like last year, this seems to be the best venue for tubers when the Frio River is running low. About a 2 hour float. Their number is 830-232-5266

Rain overnight

Hey Guys
Well, the summer season is almost upon us, and we actually got some rain last night! About an inch here, and the USGS gauge shows the Frio came up about 1/2 foot. That's quite a bit for a shallow river, and should improve tubing and kayaking for our visitors this weekend. More rain is in the forecast, so keep your fingers crossed. I'll try to take some River pics this weekend and get em on soon! Lots of folks here this weekend, you shoulda seen the traffic in front of our new office!

Past...to present

Ya know, I didn't post on my blog forever over the fall & winter, so I'm gonna do a little catchin up! And I also wanted to mention that back in September, our thoughts and prayers were with yall living down on the coast, where H-Ike devastated so many lives. These good lookin young folks pictured here, my kids & grandbabies, reside in Galveston County. So they, and many others we know from Bolivar to Santa Fe to Kemah, suffered losses. We truly hope that you are making a speedy recovery, and that it's 100 more years before the next one.

Spring Break off to a cold, wet start

If it takes bitter cold to get rain, we'll take it...and we did!

The USGS gauge showed about a 4 inch increase, but the River looks a whole lot better than that sounds. This photo and the one below were from this afternoon, and the flow & level has increased quite a bit.

The wildlife in our area should benefit greatly from the recent rains, and boy, do they need some groceries. They can't survive on deer corn alone.

Although we're in a heck of a drought, don't believe everything you read and hear in the news.

The Alamo, Kickin Back & cool lookin deer...

173 years ago today. The fall of the Alamo. Lest we forget.

The pool at Kickin Back, is going to be one of the most popular spots in Concan, that isn't on the River. KB is one of the really cool, new vacation homes that we have to offer Frio River visitors.
Sleeps 14, cools down about that many, and is just minutes from the River.

I know a bit about Kickin Back, but I haven't got any idea what kind of critters these are, in picture #2.

Gigi & I went to San Antonio yesterday, and about 9 miles towards Sabinal on TX 127, spotted these guys.

We saw them about the same time last year, just a short distance away on the Knippa hwy. I've heard what they are called twice, but can't remember how to say it, much less spell it! I'm told they are eating up the local farmer's winter wheat, and probably anything else that comes up green. If you know what kind of deer they are, please let me know.

No, it's not very warm in the Frio yet, but the swimmin hole at Vista del Rio and Butterflies r Frio is still just as deep & clear as it was late last summer. These homes are just 4 gates apart, and are fantastic places to vacation here in Concan...RIGHT ON THE RIVER!

Howdy Yall!
Hope you're ready for a great summer on the Frio River, cause it's gonna be a good one. Not because it's raining and the River's up(although it will), it's because just that being in the Frio Canyon is the best vacation escape...anytime, any conditions, anywhere!

Kelsea & Kassidy will agree that even in the wintertime,

Kayakers were out the same day plying the chilly waters beside Neal's campground.

Our local farmers are hard at it, hoping the rains come soon. We got up to 92 the other day,
then 36 hours later, it was 28 degrees!

Did I tell yall we are opening a new office this spring? I don't believe I did.

Well, about 1/2 mile before you get to the Frio River on TX 127 from Sabinal, you will now see us on the right side of the highway. We're real excited about our new location, and expect everyone that reads this to stop and say hey to FrioMan. And maybe have a cup of coffee....

Right behind the office, against the base of the mountain, sits The Cowboy House. This is one of several new vacation homes that we have to offer visitors to our beautiful area. It's not online yet, but it won't be long. Keep an eye on our website for updates.

Yesterday evening about 5:30, I was outside the office cleaning my paint rollers. There's always a big bunch of wild turkeys on the property, and I stop to admire them, every time. They are usually so wild and wary, that you don't get to see them like this. Of course, the camera was at home, so a couple of Toms put on a show. Two big boys, and then a third, completely fanned out and started struttin their stuff in front of the girls. Remind you of anyone you know? lol.
They just happened to do it in a sun drenched area under the big Live Oaks, and the colors were some kind of fine. I took the camera today, and well....you know. Maybe next time.

Lotsa trash, no rain

Well, yesterday afternoon, I went to begin cleaning our adopted stretch of highway. It's on TX127, beginning just a short distance east of the Frio, continuing 2 miles towards Sabinal. I was overly optimistic when leaving the truck with ten bags stuffed in my back pockets. About 3 hours later, I tied the top of the 2nd full bag. It's not that there isn't much trash, because there's plenty. And it's not that I was loafing...really! It's because the trash left behind by the thoughtless, the uncaring, & the ________(you can fill this in), is sooo plentiful, scattered, and small.

There were beer & soda water cans, BEER BOTTLES, plastic bottles, ice bags, deer corn bags, lotto tickets, inner tubes, magnetic signs, boards, Buc-ee's cups, Wal-Mart bags, HEB bags, straws, miscellaneous bags, hubcaps, tire strips, deer bones, antique trash, and one live armadillo!

The worst were the plastic bags and the Styrofoam cups. The sun rots them fast, so they become brittle and multiply. The best was the magnum armadillo that scared the bejeepers out of me.
Armed only with a short stick with a rusty nail attached to the end of it, I was in thick brush along the fence line pulling out debris. Traffic was light, the birds were singing...a real serene setting. All of a sudden, this big boy explodes out of the chaparral. It was over quickly. I jumped back 10 feet in a leap(maybe 3), and he took off the other way. I laughed at myself, dusted my britches, and continued.

The next interruption was okay, a friend stopped beside the hwy to visit. Then a friend of his, and then another friend of ours. Beings there were four pickups parked willy nilly on the side of the road, one traveler slowed down, thinking there had been an accident.
After a short while, I had to get back to the chore at hand. 2 miles of hwy X 2 sides = 4 miles, and I had only covered about 300 yards. Before I left good company, I offered Michael, Travis, & Jason vests & an invitation to join me, but they politely declined. (Just kiddin guys).

Bout 6pm, I called it a day. I went back and got the truck, loaded the junk, and deposited it beside the AAH sign for the TXDot guys to pick up. That reminds me, I better call them.

Flyin High

The other day, last Friday morning to be exact, Hondo and I went to visit our good friend Bruce, on a ranch near Concan. It was a beautiful, still morning, and he invited me to go for a ride in his power parachute.

Wellllll, as I like my feet planted firmly on the ground, I politely declined and decided to enjoy the show while shooting pictures of his flight. He was in the air before we knew it!

Gaining altitude quickly, turning, dipping, ohhhh, what a great decision I made!!

He buzzed us a few times before headin out over the mountains.

Talk about nosebleed, he told Hondo later that he reached an altitude of 6000 feet!
He was gone for awhile, flying over and around the Frio River & Concan.

A little later, and we can hear him coming in the distance. Just like that, he's back...

and landing safely on the ground. Darn, I knew I should have gone. Maybe next time!

Just another day in Paradise, enjoying good friends, nature, and a free air show.

Our "kids" Don & Jessi at Bunk Falls this past September, visiting us from Missouri.

As most of you Frio River regulars are aware, all of us accommodation owners(in Uvalde County) have been having to charge our guests a 12% hotel occupancy tax. Well, now you can cut that in half. The 6% that goes to the state is still gonna happen, but the 6% that funded the Texas Hill Country River Region(THCRR), is history!!

Reduced taxes is always Good News, but I'm sure yall thought I was going to say it rained here. Well.....not really. A little drizzle here, a few sprinkles there, not much more. If it would have rained a bunch, and brought the Frio up, that would have been titled GREAT, FANTASTIC, OH WOW, or something similar. When it happens, and it will, you'll know about it immediately, right here! Right now it's dreary, in the upper 30's, and ice/sleet expected overnight........

And now, it's the next morning, clear skies, and 29 degrees. Although we haven't had any measurable rain in, like forever, the River has been holding its own. No heat for evaporation, less water usage for fields & crops, and the Cypress trees are dormant. Those big beautiful trees that line our favorite river draw a ton of water to survive. We were in the same situation in early 2007, following a super dry 2006. Remember what happened that spring and summer?
It rained and rained til visitors were hollerin stop! The Frio was runnin hard and fast all that year. So, sooner or later, it will start raining again, and all will be right.

Since it's only been since last August 27th since I last posted, there's a lot I need to catch yall up on. But not all at once. We have several great new vacation homes, some online, some coming soon.

Big weekend coming up

Good Morning!

Over the last couple weeks, we've received about 5" of rain.

It hasn't done much for the Frio, but the deer appreciate it.

There will be lots of folks here for the holiday, so be careful & courteous.

The level at the 3rd x-ing should rise rapidly as visitors jump in this weekend.

One day it's up, the next it's down. Upriver irrigation......?

Hey Guys, Michele, & FrioFamily

We finally got some much needed rainfall yesterday here in Concan, about 2 1/4 ". I visited our guests at Vista del Rio in the morning, the Frio was up a little, and the water was cloudy. I went back out in the evening, and Hondo & I walked down to Bunk Falls. The little falls were running again, and the level is up some. A welcome change from a couple days ago, now let's hope we get some more.

Right now, at 9:11 a.m., August 12, it's raining steady, with lightning and thunder. It just started about ten minutes ago, and I doubt it will last long. But any rain is welcome, as we are bone dry.

Raining harder now. All of these photos were taken within the last 5 or 6 days.

Hondo (Concan Pies) & I were goofin off below Bunk Falls the other evening.

Dolly a Dud in Concan

It was hit and miss for rain from Dolly here in Concan, so the Frio River pretty much remains as it was. But vacationers are still coming in large numbers, with no cancellations. If you're comin up soon, just plan to find a nice place to swim, soak, and relax. Some hardy veterans of Frio River tubing are still making the local runs, but there is quite a bit of walking. Lot of sunshine in the forecast for the next week, but the weatherman has been known to be wrong....right!?

Recently, I had received several emails(not Blog comments)from folks with lots of questions about the area. Unfortunately, our computer crashed a week ago Friday, and we lost ALL of our emails, past and present. So if you're reading this(especially the guy who wrote the world champion longest e-mail to FrioMan ever), please resend your questions and I will do my best to answer all.

Midsummer on the Frio River

Still dry, gettin hotter, and needin rain. The almost 1" that fell over four days last week has disappeared, but the vegetation looks better from it. According to our guests who are taking tube trips, 7 Bluffs down to the 2nd crossing is still about the best. However, we ran across some folks at Bunk Falls yesterday who had put in at 7 Bluffs, and were going all the way to the 1st crossing. It had taken them about 4 1/2 hours, which was an improvement from before the rains. We have a slight chance of rain in the forecast, so keep your fingers crossed! All of the pictures here are from yesterday afternoon, 7/15.

Babies, Rain, & Big Rigs

Well, the rains came and went, but didn't give rise to the Frio. We may have gotten as much as one inch total, just enough to give the vegetation a good drink. Some friends said they were sittin in the River one day, and the water came up about six inches or so. I'm still getting the same reports from Concan visitors. Some are tubing and enjoying despite the walking and slow flow, others are content to hang out at one of the crossings or go to Garner.

Lots of new life springing up in the area, so please drive slowly and give em a chance to grow.

Taken from Bethel early this week. Seems like most of the rain hit everywhere but here.

Two weeks back, this big rig tried switchin gears goin up the hill by Neal's...he didn't make it.

The crossing was blocked for 4 1/2 hours before equipment could be brought in to clear the bridge. Folks were having to go around through Knippa and Uvalde.

That's all for now. Rain is out of the forecast for now, but ya can't always believe what you hear.

Come on out, it's still the best place to be!

No rain yet, the Frio is slow and lazy, but our guests and other folks we visited with say they're still havin a great time. I shot these pics yesterday at Comanche Crossing, the 2nd x-ing, and from the deck at Vista del Rio.

Visitors are still tubing, but there's quite a bit of walking, so be prepared for 4-5 hour trips.

The best reports are still coming from upriver, going from FM 1120 to Happy Hollow. Lots of folks are hangin out at the many crossings, and at Garner State Park.

The Frio River is still the best vacation spot in Texas, regardless of how high or low it is, so come on out and enjoy your vacation!

Everybody's Havin Fun

Hey Yall
I appreciate all the comments and e-mails, and figured I better give yall an update.
Low & slow. However, all of our guests and other folks we talk to, are having a great time hangin out at the many swimmin holes up and down the River. In Concan, the 1st and 3rd crossings are probably the best places right now. Quite a few of our guests have been spending time at Garner, where there is always deep water, plus the dance every night at the pavilion. I talked to the folks at Happy Hollow yesterday, and they said that tubing from 1120 to their store has been good, with not much walking(about two hours). They rent tubes, and provide shuttle to the crossings. They are located 1/2 mile north of Garner on US83. http://www.onthefrio.com/

Tubing here in Concan depends on the individual. Old hands are use to the highs and lows of the Frio River, and take it as it comes. Other folks get in their tubes, and don't want to get out til it's time to get back to camp. The average times now on the local trips are about 4 hours each leg, with walking. Some are saying that 3rd to 2nd is best, and others that 2nd xing to Neal's/Buchanan's is okay. Either way you go, remember to take plenty of H2O & sunscreen.
All in all, everybody we talk to have been very pleased with their vacation to the Best Little River Anywhere. They are tubing, swimming, going to the Frio Bat Cave, Garner dance, relaxing in the River and at their vacation home, and lots of other stuff.

Memorial Day '08

Hi Guys
According to those that did get to the River(yours truly did not), there wasn't much room for the water. One of our guests said that they expected to take 5 hours going from 7 Bluffs to Neal's, but it took them 8 hours. I told them I couldn't believe that the Frio had slowed down that much in just a couple days, and they said the River was okay. It's just that there were so many tubers, floaters, & kayakers, they were moving verrry sloow. But come Monday, most folks were headed home, leaving the Frio to the lucky stragglers. With school still in session for most this week, we still have a few opening for this weekend, so come on out!

Unfortunately, there was a fatality this past weekend. A man visiting the Canyon was killed on his motorcycle in a collision with a car on TX 127, just down the road from the 1st crossing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Hopefully, there will be nothing else but great times on the Frio from here on out.

Seven Bluffs parking

Remember how far away you had to park last year from the 3rd crossing? Well, some local entrepreneurs have done some work to make it more convenient. There is now a nice $10 parking area right at the Seven Bluffs crossing.

As you can see, it's already getting used quite a bit.

There were lots of visitors to the Frio River this weekend, but a guy like this, needs to stay home, or get an education in Texas River etiquette! For those of you who do not understand this harsh statement, note the GLASS bottle in his hand. Glass containers are not allowed in, on, or near our beautiful Rivers. All yall veterans out there, please spread the word and let folks know that what they are doing is dangerous. I preached some about this last summer, but maybe I need to put a reminder in every post. If you've ever seen someone coming out of the Frio with their foot, arm, or other body part cut by glass left by some uncaring person, then you'll see where I'm comin from. I don't want to see any confrontations started, but if you see someone with glass containers on the Frio, let them know what the consequences could be. That same beer bottle, if broken and in the gravel forever, may harm someone he cares for sometime in the future.

While yall are out there getting ready for your 2008 Frio River vacation, we're busy here in Concan getting ready for you! That's the truth, and the only excuse I have for not posting in so long. I took these last Thursday, near and on Bunk Falls, and the tubers at the 2nd crossing.

These guys are right next to Concan Pies, waiting for them to open May 24 & 25, then reopening May 31 for the summer. Talk about early birds..........

If you aint never been to the Wild Hog Festival in Sabinal Texas, well.... ya better make plans to come out next year. It is a BLAST!
Although these pictures are mostly the older contestants, it starts out with younguns no bigger than the pigs they're chasin. Those pics will be in the next post, later today. The festival has great food, arts & crafts, & entertainment for everyone. Then there's th hawgs. Two person teams attempt to grab a wild(yes, FERAL) hog, then put it in a to' sack, then get it across the line the fastest.

Local talent Emily K. & Jenny V. from Concan took the gold buckle in the Saturday morning women's division. Way to go ladies!

Texas Independence Day

On this 172nd anniversary of Texas' declaration of independence from Mexico, I stand in awe of the bravery and ultimate sacrifice shown by the men and women, Texan & Mexican, during the struggle for an independent and free Texas. Although it was a very long time ago, we need to remember that those that gave their lives were real people, who left behind loved ones, as our brave American soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan have done for the last five years. I am so very proud of our AMERICAN troops who are away from home fighting for the name of freedom while we stay home secure and free to do as we please. May God bless our troops and keep them safe. I love everything & everywhere Texas, especially the Frio River area that is our home. I could get up on my soap box and go on and on about why Texas is the best place to live, but I'll keep it to this short sentiment that is in my heart. Besides, yall know what I'm talkin about!

Well, the temps are staying warm, the Mountain Laurel is blooming, and the trees are showin green! I've been pretty absent in posting this winter, but I'm fixin to start puttin more on startin right now! I'll be out and about taking pictures and updatin yall and all that stuff we did last summer. I get around the area quite a bit, so if ya want to know what's happenin, holler at me.

Where there's smoke....

Hey out there Frio River fanatics!
I bet there's a bunch of yall havin withdrawal symptoms about right now. The weather here in Concan has been wonderful, but we are definitely ready for a little rain. Actually, we have a pretty good chance for some showers today. The Frio is still runnin fine, it's just that the vegetation is very dry. The picture below is a good example for letting folks know the hazards of throwing cigarettes out the window, open fires, fireworks, etc. This was one of two range fires Saturday on RR337 just west of Leakey. One was small and contained quick, the other burned quite a bit of coutryside before it was snuffed.

Well, the songbirds are already beginning to show up, and the Mountain Laurel and Agarita should be starting to bloom soon. Spring, my favorite time of year! We still have some cold weather to endure, but it's not far off. If you haven't been to Concan in the Spring, you don't know what you're missin. Six of our wonderful vacation homes are available in the off season, so come on out for a visit, we'd love to see ya!

Garner State Park Ceremony

The message below was sent to us by Friends of Garner State Park. As most of you know, Garner is the jewel of the Texas State park system, and is just 8 miles up the road from us.

Garner State Park Official Texas Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony:

1. The dedication ceremony will be held at the Concession Building, Garner State Park, Concan, Texas, February 17, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. Please join us in honoring the Civilian Conservation Corps “boys” (CCCers) who constructed our beautiful park. I will appreciate your passing the word along to others you consider to be interested in attending.

2. I’m still finalizing exact details of the ceremony, but it should unfold as follows:

a. Eagle Scouts will lead the group in the pledge of allegiance to the United States of America and Texas flags.

b. Uvalde County Judge William R. Mitchell will speak.

c. Special guests, such as former CCCers, their descendents, the park manager, etc., will be introduced.

d. CCCers will unveil the marker.

e. Reading of the marker inscription.

f. Short entertainment program (if available).

g. Prayer.

h. Closing of the ceremony.

i. Invitation to the Tower Room (if available) for refreshments and visiting. (If Tower Room is not available, we will just move to the Covered Porch on the east side of the Concession Building.)

3. Thank all of you who have contributed so much in achieving the marker goal!

Well, the beautiful sunny days we were having for the last several weeks are history. Now it's damp, foggy, cool, and expected to get real cold later this week. But who am I to complain, I'm livin here and lovin it!!

Dry conditions...

...Not the Frio River, it's still doing fine. The great amounts of rainfall last summer still have the River flowin real good. When I was down at Neal's campground last week, I saw that the spring down there was still going strong. That's a good thing.

It's the ground that's so dry. We haven't had much rain at all this winter. The last I can remember was about half an inch around Thanksgiving. We've been under a burn ban in Uvalde county for several months, as has Real county.

Firework stand just north of Uvalde on US83, last Friday.

The above picture illustrates why, at certain times, a ban on burning is necessary. Luckily for these folks, there was a north wind blowin. If you have been on our website, and read our Policies, you've seen that fireworks are not allowed at any of our vacation homes, or open fires. Not only is it our policy, but also subdivision rules. Most of our homes are located within these boundaries, therefore this will be strictly enforced. You ask why....see above photo. If there had been a lot of brush in this fire instead of just grass, it would have burned a much larger area.

If a fire began in the Concan hills, it could spread fast through the cedar and brush, engulfing homes and endangering lives. Please do not ignore this on your next Frio River vacation, no matter who you are staying with.

All is great here, with temps in the 70's, and lots of sunshine. Don't wait too long to make reservations for your 2008 vacation, and remember that FrioMan's vacation homes are second to none! Looks like we're adding yet another wonderful property to the FrioMan Family of luxury homes, so stay tuned!

We had a full house all summer, and at that time wished we had more vacation homes for all the folks who called looking for a place to stay. HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Hey Yall

Sorry it's been so long since I've posted. During the off season we get busy with the construction side of our business, and have been really goin strong. The weather has been so nice out here at the Frio River, with cool nights and sunny days. But we really could use some of those showers that were so plentiful during this past summer. It's cracklin dry out here. We've been workin over in Reagan Wells, west of Uvalde on the Nueces, way up in Roaring Springs near Camp Wood, and of course, right here in beautiful "downtown" Concan.

Can't imagine why these guys are so nervous. After all, H.E.B. is only 20 miles from here, and they're already cleaned.

I took these two pictures this morning from a ridge in Roaring Springs, while traveling to visit with a customer(Hey Thad). The fog was thick as pea soup from Concan to Leakey. Then, as I topped the mountains west of Leakey on RR337, it lifted. Actually, it didn't "lift", it was just that I had driven high enough where I was above the fog. Really cool!!

Hill Country....yeah right. Climb one of em, then tell me it's a hill.

Well, the man who owns Riding River Ranch north of Leakey on RR336 (http://www.ridingriverranch.com/), wants to pump 65,000 gallons of water DAILY from Kent Creek. This beautiful little creek, which is northwest of Leakey, feeds the west prong of the Frio River.

Frost on the Concan pumpkin

Can you believe it? I had to go outside and put my hands on it to make sure it wasn't just a heavy dew. Frost, and 35 degrees! We had a 50 degree drop in less than 48 hours. But, we've all seen it before, right? We should start getting some color change on the trees soon, and when that happens, I'll be goin around shootin pictures for yall to enjoy.

Better yet, why not make plans soon to spend a weekend with us in the Canyon. You'll love it, especially if you've never seen the Frio River area in the Fall.

I just took this last weekend at Rancho Real, above Leakey. I wonder if these guys are gonna fly south now......

Oh baby, it's cold outside

Well, it's not that cold. But compared to yesterday, it's a drastic change. Yesterday, we worked outside, trimmin trees, workin on fence, etc. It was sunny, in the eighties, and breezy. Early this morning, around 3 a.m., it sounded like a freight train blowin through. I mean, it was howlin! I guess by now, the same cold front has whistled through your area too. By the time we got up, it was in the upper 40's, with the winds gusting to 45mph. Things are quieter now, and the temp is droppin fast. It's supposed to get in the low 40's tonight....brrrrr.

Don't Mess With TEXAS!

We all know what today's title means, but there's still a lot of "#^*@!!" out there who don't worry about trashing our environment. I'm fixin to go out and feed the deer, and we'll see if he was able to "shed" the trash bag some thoughtless individual threw to the ground. I took this shot Saturday evening.
When you're here, and see someone throwing their junk into the River, on the ground, or side of the road, let them know you don't appreciate it!

Quiet Times

I guess everybody is too busy with school, work, football, and Halloween to be thinkin about the Frio River & Concan...or maybe not.
Actually, quite a lot of people do have the River on their minds, because they have been calling us making reservations for next Summer. Now, that's smart! We'll get a ton of calls next Spring from folks looking for a place to stay, but just about everything is booked by then. So make your Concan vacation plans early with family and friends, and call soon.

Well, yours truly has been stuck at the ol computer catchin up on paperwork, emails, and answering phones. I did get away Monday to catch a few floaters that just went past Bunk Falls.
I figured they were playin hooky til I remembered some folks were off for Columbus Day.

After they went by, all you could hear was the water cascading over the Falls, and the singing of the birds high in the ancient Cypress trees. How wonderful it is to be here.

As soon as I get caught up with my work, I'm jumpin in...right here!

Blue Skies

What a gorgeous day it was yesterday at the Frio River. It's not like we don't have a whole lot of them, it's just that the sky seemed bluer than normal. Don't you agree?

There were quite a few folks here this weekend enjoying the unseasonably warm weather. The water temps are still very comfortable to swim and tube, as you can see by the photos from yesterday.

Changes comin

Hey fellow Frio River afficionados. Summer showed up this week, with temps in the 90's, and lots of sunshine. We had a few showers yesterday, but that didn't dampen the spirits of our guests, and other visitors to Concan. They reported great tubing, and told us what a great time they had.

These guys don't care about the leaves, they just don't want to go home!

Our books open for reservations for all of our wonderful vacation homes tomorrow morning, Monday, October 1.

Another nice, warm day today here in Concan, and very quiet. Since school started back, there aren't a lot of folks visiting the canyon during the week. But for the ones that are here, ya know they're enjoying the Frio River's cool clear waters, and havin it to themselves...withoutcha! Ahh, the lazy days of late summer.

"Hi FrioMan, my name is Amber and I am a true Frio River Rat. My family always follows your blog. I am with the Frio Family that always leaves comments on your page. Not the 14 yr. old though, I am the older college student. I truly love the Frio and I love introducing people to the Frio. On Monday I took my friend that has never been before. We floated, he snorkled and we also had the whole place to ourselves. He loved it. I wanted to send you a pic and a blog but I am not sure how so my Mom just told me to e-mail it to you. So here I am relaxing in the Frio. This is what I always do first thing when I get there. Find me a little shallow place with a spring where it is cold, lay down, close my eyes and not think about a thing. We are actually going on the 21st. The whole family. I can't wait, I already miss it. The second pic you see is the Frio Family Kids. Caleb (11), Kellen (14 with the hat) and me Amber (i am 23). Sad News from the Frio

A young man drowned Saturday afternoon while tubing the Frio River. Hondo called me Saturday, and said a young fellow came running up his drive, and asked him to call 911. He said his buddy was in bad shape, and needed help fast. As you may recall from earlier posts, Hondo lives above Bunk Falls, and the man had come downriver a ways looking for a place to find help.
From what I understand, the tragedy occurred upriver of the Falls around Daddy B's Bathtubs.
This area is where the large boulders are in the middle of the River, about 400 yards before the Falls. I don't know all the details, but Hondo was told the young man was towing the ice chest tube, and had it tied to his ankle. I'm not going to try to tell you what happened, because I wasn't there. But those of you familiar with the Frio, and tubing in general, can just imagine the possibilities.

Our hearts go out the family & friends of this young man. They are in our prayers.

"Cold Front"

Wow. We had a little front come through, and the temps are fantastic. It's in the 60's this a.m., and it's expected to be upper 80's this afternoon. We stayed in the 70's Tuesday. But the Frio water temps haven't changed, and there's still lots of time to enjoy it's pleasures.

I took this picture yesterday afternoon at the 3rd crossing(7 Bluffs). Hondo, from Concan Pies and I were riding around on business....... and stopped to take it all in.

These folks were on the downriver side of the crossing enjoying their peaceful surroundings. They had it all to themselves. This could be you!

If you want to enjoy the beautiful Frio River when it is serene and peaceful, but still warm enough to immerse yourself in it's crystal clear waters, now's the time. If you've never experienced being on the River with only those with you, you ought to try it. There's still quite a few folks coming on the weekends, but weekdays are very quiet right now.

As folks were leaving Concan and the Frio River Monday, after a wonderful Labor Day weekend, the rains came again. We had some showers each of the last few days, but plenty of sunshine for some good times on the River. And there's still good times ahead here, with great flow, and warm weather to look forward to for some time yet. Vacation rental rates are down and the crowds are gone, making this time of year an excellent time to sneak away for a weekend of fun on the Frio.

Today(Tuesday) brought some heavy rains totaling a tad over 3 1/2", which gave rise to the River just a bit. This will be just another charge to the flow which has been so good all summer. How can you wait til next year for another trip, when conditions are so good RIGHT NOW!

Super Summer Far From Over

This was taken Saturday afternoon at the 1st crossing on Tx127. As you can see, lots of folks were here enjoying the Frio River's cool, clear waters. The upcoming Labor Day weekend is shaping up to be a good one, with just a slight chance of rain in the forecast. Like rain bothers us out here, Ha! It rained most all of June & July, the River comin up and goin down almost as often as the sun itself. Everything is lush and green, & the Frio was, is, and will be flowin great for a long time still. Thanks to all you folks that stayed with FrioMan Vacation Lodging this year, and we hope to see yall again soon. We're beginning to take reservations for some of our vacation homes for 2008, and will be booking for all of them by October 1st. Keep an eye on our website for updates.

WOW! Time flies when you're havin fun, and that's all that's goin on here on the Frio River ...FUN! I just saw that my last post was on the 20th, and that's too long.

The weather here has been fantastic, and the River is flowing beautifully. There's still quite a few folks here on the weekdays, and this weekend was full of Frio River fun lovin fanatics.

The conditions will be great long into September, so make plans to come on out and stay with us.

Then, if it turns too cool for fun on the water, there's still plenty to do and see.

Hey Mike(waving) & Gayle(sittin pretty in blue)! We didn't know it was yall til we got home and looked at the pics on the computer. A couple of our super nice locals out enjoyin the River Saturday above the 2nd xing.

What storm?

As you can see from this picture taken early this afternoon, the Frio is not flooding, and we had no rise at all from the rains last night. The NWS had forecasted a rise to 11.5 feet, but fortunately it didn't happen. We had a good shower about 4:30p.m., but the sun was back out soon.

These folks from Brownwood were enjoying their first day on the River this afternoon, and took time out to pose for FrioMan. Thanks guys & gals, yall were great!

Here at FVL, we are very aware of Hurricane Dean, and the forecasted paths that have been predicted...from Houston to Mexico. Folks are calling, asking "Will the River be flooded next week?", "Is the hurricane goin to hit Concan?", "Is it goin to be rainin when we get to the Frio?"
Even though FrioMan knows who is going to win the World Series, the Super Bowl, and what the next winning lotto numbers are...there is no way he can forecast the weather or Frio River conditions for next week, or even for tomorrow. Sorry.

Erin Go...away

Well, things had gotten back to normal here at the Frio River, with the temps in the 90's, the ground dried up, and the River still runnin great. Just yesterday I was on the ridin mower in a huge cloud of dust.

And now, the rains are back, thanks to a wild child by the name of Erin. According to the NWS, the Frio is supposed to rise to about 11.5 feet, oh heck, I'll just copy & paste.

"I thought you would get a kick out of this picture. This was on the 26th of July. I was the one who's husband was worried about getting across the Comanche Creek Crossing because of all the rain and the river being up. The other people in our group took the picture as they waited for us to cross. They all have 4x4 trucks and ours is just a 1500. The people standing on the other side were doing the same thing cause they were not sure if they could make it or not. LOL My son even put his life jacket on! Just in Case. LOL Thanks again. Keep up the good work. LOVE THE FRIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Well, 2-uh-days, back to school shoppin, reloading shotgun shells, and summer's over, right? Wrong!!
The first 3 are prob right, but if you think summer is over, well...just ask these folks at the 3rd xing. They were here on the Frio River in Concan Texas USA having a blast!

And they weren't the only ones here either. Families and friends were out en masse Sunday enjoying the cool clear waters of our favorite River in the world. Our weekends are booked thru Labor Day, but there are still openings during the week in some of the best vacation acommodations to be found in Concan. The weekends after Labor Day are pretty much wide open, so give us a call.
Trash Bash is the weekend after Labor Day, and is a great time to enjoy the companionship of fellow Frio River enthusiasts. This is the annual event where serious Frio Folks(that are able to get away of course) come clean the River of cans, bottles(ouch), shoes, caps, TRASH...that the pigs carelessly left behind. You know who you are, and please don't come back!

South of the border

Hey Frio River fans
Sorry for the long delay between posts. I'm not going to make that a habit, cuz I know you want/need updates more often. We are finally in a more normal summer pattern, with the temps in the 90's, and lots of sunshine. However, the Frio is still in excellent shape, flowing strong and clear. I've been gettin several comments and emails from folks wantin to be on FrioMan Blog, but haven't gotten any pics yet from anybody.
Share your stories, email some pictures. I hope yall aren't gonna forget about your favorite River just because of school, football, yadee yadee.

A "business" trip took us across the border to Acuna this week, where we dined at our favorite restaurant. Of course you have heard of Ma Crosby's in song, and The Corona Club from your buddies. They're both good places to go, one a watering hole, the other food and drink.
But we discovered Manuel's last year, and drive straight there as soon as we cross over. A man in the parking lot will get you safely in(tip him), and then you can take off walkin, shoppin, or whatever you want to do. Just let him know you're comin back to eat at their diner when you get hungry.

These fine folks from San Angelo were havin a great time at Manuel's while we were there.

The folks here will make sure you have plenty to eat & drink. Here are some of the friendly staff you will encounter at Manuel's. Steaks, shrimp, enchiladas, cabrito, & MARGARITAS! They have a lot more than that, but I can attest to those dishes being very tasty.
You don't need a passport yet, to come back home to Texas, but you still should have your TDL with you. Even passengers.

What a glorious day it was in Concan today. Nothin but sunshine, with a nice breeze all day.

According to the weatherbug, it only got up to 90 degrees today. That is awesome considering we are normally around 100 during the dog days of August.

The Frio is recovering from a very busy weekend, and so were some of the locals. I probably sound like a broken record, but I don't know if I've ever seen the River look any better. Everything is so green and lush, it looks like a rainforest...awesome. We have dried out somewhat from the summer long rains, and that's a good thing considering what it's done to the roads here.

The more folks we have visiting, the busier we get, and WE LOVE IT! And that's why I haven't posted an update in three days or so. Now I'm back, and I'll be here as long as yall keep lettin me know you're out there with your nice comments and emails..

If you've already been here this summer, you need to come back for a repeat.
If you're thinkin about comin out, ya better hurry.
If you've never been here,tsk,tsk....Now's the time.

You come to the Frio once a year. The anticipation and eagerness prior to your trip make the workdays go by slower and sloowwer. About a month before you leave, you start checkin your list, your gear, & your reservations. You constantly check FrioMan Blog for updates on current conditions in the Frio Canyon. A week before your trek, your truck or SUV is packed with everything you need for your vacation(less the spouse & kids til departure), fueled up, and parked til it's time to go.You ride your bike to work now, or carpool with your "buddy" that can't make the trip.

FR-Day arrives. You wake at 3:00a.m., throw your spouse, the kids, and the dog in...and you're off! You get here, have the time of your life for three days, then all of a sudden you're back at work. OMG...I have to wait another year before I go back to the Frio River. #*!*#*!!

Sound familiar? Well, maybe just part of it? Instead of waiting another year for your "annual" Concan vacation, why not treat yourself and your family to another exciting trip to the River?
Frio River Lovers, the conditions at The Best River in Texas are sooo good this summer, you really oughtta come on out.
It's like "surf's up at Padre", "fresh powder at Steamboat", the trout are thick at Fat Rat" "the Bluebonnets are beautiful around Brenham", etc. You get my drift? When conditions are right for the things that you love to do, you usually don't sit around and read about, do you?

Never Too Early

If you're reading this, chances are you've been to the Frio Canyon in the summertime, and enjoyed the wonders of the crystal clear Frio River.
But if you wait til next summer to come back, you're going to miss one of the best seasons in the Texas Hill Country. The pictures below illustrate the natural beauty to be found in our area during the fall months. We took these last November during a trip to Lost Maples State Natural Area. It's a beautiful place to go hike, fish, picnic, or just relax under the changing Big Tooth Maples. The Natural Area is within an hour's drive from Concan, and FrioMan's vacation homes.

The drive over to Lost Maples from Leakey on 337 is one I never tire of. Brother-by-law was down visiting from Kansas a couple years back, and we were showing him around. He asked me why they called this area "The Hill Country", as we were driving thru the many mountain passes and pulling the steep grades. Excellent observation. Granted, this isn't the Rockies, but it's Texas, and that's what counts!

These sacks are donated by Friends of the Frio, First State Bank of Uvalde, and the Texas Hill Country River Region, and are available free at just about any camp/resort in the Frio Canyon. PLEASE take some with you as you float the Frio. This way you can sack all your trash as you go, and maybe even pick up some more that some"wannabe" Frio River visitors thoughtlessly left behind.

Yesterday dawned cloudy and wet from yet another early morning storm, but the day turned out to be warm and rain free. The Frio did come up a little, but it just reinforced the fantastic flow, and is in great shape.
We woke up this a.m. to sunshine streaming through the windows, and it is oh so welcome!

Yall get on out here, conditions are perfect for a Concan/Frio River vacation!
And remember, the season doesn't end just cuz the younguns are back in school by the end of August. The River is always awesome, but late summer and early fall days have more of a tranquil, laid back feel. Usually you have more of the Frio to yourself, and it's much quieter.

The Firetruck & the Tahoe

Remember the rescue at Reagan Wells last weekend?

The Curry's Tahoe was located today, just downriver from this spot on the Dry Frio. It was belly up, and totaled. I'm so glad to tell yall that Gary Curry said Carolyn is doing just fine.

The Reagan Wells VFD truck was pulled out this weekend from Pine Holler, where it rolled during a rescue attempt during the flooding Saturday week ago. It didn't fare well either. If anyone out there knows of a good, used firetruck in working condition, that they would like to see go to a great VFD, please let me know soon. Spread the word!

Here in Concan,we had another strong storm early this a.m., with lots of lightning, and some heavy rain. But it didn't last long, and the sun came up as scheduled. Everybody was on the Frio havin fun, and the great weather lasted all day.

I sure would like to hear from more of yall, so tell us about your trip to the River, ask questions, email pictures, etc. Thanks to everybody who has left the nice comments, and sent the emails.

Pretty Good Day

Saturday was a good day to be on the Frio River, that is, until about 4:30 p.m. The day was mixed with some sun, lotsa clouds, and warm. There were a lot of folks out enjoying the River, tubing, kayaking, visiting, and relaxing. Then, at the aforementioned time, we had one humdinger of a storm. Heavy rain(about 2 inches), and lots of lightning. The flood warning sirens sounded a short time later, letting everyone know to get off the River. Luckily, it didn't come up high at all, and floating should be ok again today. The pics below were taken between 6 and 7pm yesterday evening, after the storm.

Drive slowly when crossing here, because the road is boogered up pretty bad. It is passable.

The road is closed on the east side, so if you're trying to reach Seven Bluffs Cabins & RV Park, you'll need to come from US83.

There's still rain in the forecast for the next day or two, but if we planned our activities around what the weatherman says, we might be couch potatoes for life. Nothin to it

There were a lot of people tubing and kayaking and relaxing yesterday on the Frio River in CONCAN. All is fine here. The flooding on the Frio is way downriver at Tilden, which is not even on our radar. Tx127 was closed for awhile yesterday due to high water at Brushy Creek, but TxDot is not showing it closed this am. These pics are from yesterday afternoon at Comanche Crossin, between 7 Bluffs and the 2nd crossing.

It's cloudy right now, but no rain, not even overnight. We'll keep our fingers crossed that we have a dry weekend...or three.

No Rain Today

After some pretty good rains overnite, the day turned out to be a good one overall. Partly cloudy skies, warm, and the Frio is runnin swift. It was just a bit murky from the runoff, but still clear enough to enjoy. You may run into a couple inches of water over Shut In Creek at River Road, but the 1st and 2nd crossings are open. I didn't get down to the 3rd crossing at Seven Bluffs, but I heard the road was blocked there. If so, and you are trying to get to Seven Bluffs Cabins & RV Park, you can come in from CR348 on the North side, off of US83.

Toobin...on a, sunny afternoon. If this doesn't getcha in a Frio kinda mood, well....

Comanche Crossing

Here ya go Stacy.
This was from about 10:30 this morning at Comanche Crossing. It's going across a little swifter than normal, but folks were passing ok as of that time.
Conditions on the Frio River can change extremely fast, and visitors need to be alert to their surroundings. But right now people are tubin, swimmin, and havin fun.
Everyone needs to keep their younguns close, but you can usually find shallow water for them to play in.
As for the River being up the past few days. It's been up all summer, and it's fantastic.

Bunk Falls, 7-23-07, 5:15 p.m.

Let me tell those of you who don't know, where Bunk Falls are. When you put in at the second crossing, you float aways, start veering on the the little rapids to the left, then you're in front of
Frio Country cabins. You're still headin downriver(hopefully)through some good little rapids, a deeper spot by a big rock, then slows down a bit. Up ahead, you'll see some boulders, and begin to hear the water going through them. This is known as Daddy B's Bathtubs. Goin through the boulders with the water runnin fast as it is now, is akin to being the ball in a pinball machine. FUN! Just hang on tight, and go with the flow. Now you're headin towards the falls, up ahead several hundred yards. As you get closer, you'll start hearing the roar of the water, as your adrenaline level rapidly increases.
You have two choices...
(1) Women, children, and the not so athletic, exit left around the falls.
(2) Men, send the beverage buggy, your sunshades, LW & T, anything loose, with the folks goin around the falls. It's just you & your tube/kayak. Now show em how it's done.(see next picture)

Sure, it's loud and fast and... so. GO FOR IT! If you fall out(hence the name falls), just stand up or swim with the current. There are no deep holes at Bunk Falls, but there are some hydraulics that may keep you against them when you go over. And sometimes, you shoot over smooth, and keep on floatin. I've ate it, and I've made it. I've looked like a pro, and a few times...not.
It is very possible to bang your head, knees, and other body parts, anywhere on the River, so be safe and use good judgement. Especially when it involves the little ones.

Just havin fun guys. We sat down at Bunk Falls this evening with Hondo Spence, takin these pics and a lot more for this here BLOG. Hondo is the son of the late Bunk Spence, whom the falls are named for.
Men, women, and children were going over the falls. Some made it, most ate it, nobody was hurt, and they're probably back in camp tonight telling their stories.

Tx 127 is closed from Sabinal to Concan due to road damage at Little Blanco Creek & Brushy Creek. One source said it will be open at 6 a.m. Monday morning, but the TXDOT site says it will reopen Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Better go with the officials on this one. So if you're traveling to our area tonight, tomorrow, or early Tuesday, stay on US 90 to Uvalde. When you get to the intersection of US 90 & US 83(the intersection of the 2 longest roads in the United States), turn right(north) on US 83 to Concan(23miles) or Leakey(40miles). This will add about 20 - 30 minutes to your trip, but save you a lot of hassle and worry about the roads. Besides, there's an HEB, WalMart, SuperS, and the Oasis Outback. You can get everything you need for your vacation in Uvalde, so going out of your way would be worth the trip.

A nice lady(Dorothy T.) emailed me, wondering where Shut In Creek(also known as Shut In Holler) was. She has been comin here for many years, and had never heard of it until I posted the pics and info about it. I'm sure she's not alone.

If you have driven down River Road(CR348) from Tx127, you have crossed over Shut In. Remember the dip in the road about a half mile down?...that's it! Usually dry from that point to where it meets the Frio, Shut In lived up to it's name Saturday. All of us in between the raging creek and the Second crossing were literally shut in, and had to wait it out. I snapped the pics of Shut In Falls off of CR392, which makes a little loop down there from River Road

And for those of you(gazillions, I'm sure) who have floated from the Second crossing to Neal's... at the upriver end of Neal's campground, to your right, is where Shut In empties into the River.

It usually looks like a little deep backwater, and when you get beside it, the water temp drops considerably. But yesterday, as you can see in the pics from the last two posts, she was alive!

Shut In runs behind our place, between us and US83. It came way out of it's banks up here, and was really truckin. Awesome!

It's looking good for the next couple days, but I'm no smarter than the next San Antonio weather forecaster(lol). The Frio is runnin great and folks were back in doin what they came here for.

Reagan Wells Rescue

Reagan Well is a small community on the Dry Frio River, about 12 miles from Concan.

Yesterday morning, Dick Peterson and Gary Curry took the Reagan Wells VFD firetruck to rescue Carolyn Curry, Gary's wife. Carolyn was stranded in her Tahoe, which was hanging onto the edge of flooded Pine Holler. This is a small wash that drains into the Dry Frio River just downstream a bit. It's usually bone dry, but the heavy rains yesterday were swelling everything that would hold water.
By the time they reached the crossing, Carolyn and her vehicle had disappeared. As they attempted to cross Pine Holler to begin their search, water started filling the big truck quickly. Dick and Gary had no choice but to get out of the truck as fast as possible. As they reached the top, the firetruck started to roll over, and they both jumped away from the vehicle into the waters. Luckily, they were able to grab the fence that had served as a water gap, and pulled theirselves to safety.
Mrs. Curry, after spending two and a half hours fighting for her life in the floodwaters of the Dry Frio, was rescued by a neighbor across the river, Roy Glasscock, and his friend Paul White. As of late yesterday, the Tahoe had not been found.

Thank God all are safe and back with their loved ones.

Shut In Creek

The rain has finally stopped, but the runoff from the hills is still going strong into the creeks and the Frio River. I'm not sure if Tx127 is open yet, but I'll let you know later. According to the USGS gauge, the River is below seven feet. There's still rain in the forecast for tonight, so keep track of road conditions on the TXDOT site if you're heading our way. The pictures below are from noon today.

If you're here, sit tight. If you have plans to come here today..well, don't. The Tx127 bridge is closed, and US90 is closed around Hondo. According to the USGS rain gauge, we have received over 10 inches of rain so far, and as of now(11:12 a.m.), it's not letting up. I'm going out now for pictures, and see what it looks like. Check back later for updates. If you are on the road and come to an area of high water, do what they say:

Rainy day

We had more rain today. Nothing heavy, just a good soaker. There was a little sun occasionally, and there were lots of folks enjoying the Frio. There is rain in the forecast the next couple of days, but it's great for the River, so we can't complain. This time last year, folks were carrying their tubes more than sittin in 'em. Not so this Summer. Everyone is coming back telling us how great the floatin is, and that they are able to take several different trips each day.

This big boy was visiting Sundancer a couple months ago, and you could do the same!

Good Evening out there in cyberspace. We had another fantastic day at the Frio River, with folks everywhere having a blast. There were some strong spotty rainshowers throughout the day, but the sun was out bright in between. For about the last two hours, we have had occasional heavy rain, and the WeatherBug is forecasting more of the same for the next day or so. But ya never know, I was in Uvalde today, where it was pouring downtown, but not on the east side.

Liana & Keren weren't worried about the recent rains, they were just enjoying their day on the River. Ahh, to be young again.

I don't believe these floaters were worried about nothing but gettin downriver too fast, and that's what it's all about...takin it easy on the Frio River!

Tip of the day:
When tying tubes together, especially to keep your kids close, may not always be a great idea.
I've seen this happen several times, and it is no fun. You're floatin down the Frio, with your five year old on her own tube, which is tied to yours. You're laid back, soakin up the sun, and all of a sudden, the water starts moving faster. Then, you see a small tree or boulder in your path downriver coming at you fast. No matter how hard you backstroke, you can't avoid it. You end up on one side of the obstacle, your child on the other, and you are both flipped out of your tubes.
As is the case most of the time, everybody comes out okay, just scared really bad. A neat thing about the Frio is, shallow water or the bank is always close by. Lazily floating down the River is very relaxing, and one of the reasons you came here. But until you get to know it well, staying slightly ahead of your children while tubing, may be better than lashing your tubes together. That way, if you encounter or see anything ahead that may cause problems, you can get out of your tube and direct your loved ones from harm's way. The best thing I will always tell folks is, to be aware of their surroundings. I've been floating for many years, and have seen many wrecks caused by tubes tied together. Actually, a lot of them have been the guy/gal totin the beverage cooler...right guys?

Last night, I told you I would let you in on a little secret, or was it something about the best desserts in the Frio Canyon.
Well, let me introduce you to Randy(Hondo) & Elaine Spence, great friends and the proprietors of Con Can Pies. These fine folks put out a generous variety of the most scrumptious pies, cakes, & cobblers, to be found......well, just about anywhere.

And who can resist a fresh baked pie? Better get there early, because they go fast.
They are open from 11:00 a.m. daily(closed Tuesdays), til they run out. The runnin out is the bad news. The good news is, that you can order ahead for the next day(full payment required when placing your order), and not have to rush down there hoping there's something left for your dessert at lunch.

The River is almost crystal clear again, and people were out by the bucketful. The flow is excellent though, so everyone's movin right along with few logjams. Roads are open, the River's rollin, ol Sol is shining bright again. Hurry out here, conditions just don't get any better!

Have I told yall about Concan Pies? I'll be back tomorrow to let you in on where to find the best desserts in the Canyon.

FrioMan says hey to Ron from Concan, who is on a trip to Bulgaria on "business". Your boys and a girl are doin just fine, so no worries.

We had a warm, partly cloudy day today, with lots of vacationers on the River havin a good time.
Young and not as young, tubers and kayakers alike, were back in the water today after the small rise we had yesterday kept most folks off of the Frio. The water is a little murky, but should be cleared up by tomorrow. The flow is excellent, and if you're headed this way, your timing is perfect. So get on out here, and join in on the fun! We still have several openings, but you better call soon.

Yo-Yo Frio

Well....The Frio has gone up and down so many times this summer, she's like a yo-yo. I took these at 4:30 this evening. The first picture is at Vista del Rio, and the others are from a hill overlooking Comanche Crossing. Real County Sheriff's Dept. had called this a.m. and let us know a small rise was coming down. They were correct again, thanks guys! The bridge on Tx127 @ Neal's was still closed this evening, but as quick as the River goes down, it should be open again by tomorrow morning(if no more rain falls).

If you still have to wait for the River to go down, or it's just time to eat, Neal's Cafe has the best breakfast(and lunch and supper) anywhere in the Frio Canyon, and coffee so good you can't get enough. I recommend a Chase Special Omelet with Rodger's homemade hot sauce. It is so good!

They are forecasting just a slight chance of rain tonight and tomorrow, with the remainder of the week sunny and hot.....we'll see! For the last couple of days, the rain has fallen mostly at night or very early, giving vacationers a lot of quality time on the River. We'll see what tomorrow brings when it gets here.

We are more than happy to let yall know what we know about River conditions over the phone, but please remember.

Hey Yall

Been tryin to post pictures the last two nites, but the server or the blogger website or something is out-smartin this old caveman. I know current pictures are important to go along with what I have to say each day, so I hope to fix the problem....SOON!

I went down to the swimmin hole at TX 127 this a.m., and everyone was having a great time. The River was cleared back up and looking good. We had a rainshower early, but there was quite a bit of sunshine mixed with clouds the rest of the day. The sheriff's dept. had called this morning saying another small rise was coming down, and that was correct. I don't think it even cloudied the River. While I'm 2finger typing this, I am trying for the umpteenth time to upload the pics...we'll see. I tried to publish this message once, and it didn't go, so I'm gonna try one more time.AARRgggghhhhh.

Hondo of Concan Pies on River Road @ Bunk Falls said the Frio is great there.
Another great friend of ours over at Comanche Crossing said her friends and family had a super time tubin and swimmin all day. We had another downpour this evening but it's all good now.

Happy 4th of July!

We arose this morning to find out that the Frio didn't come up as high as expected. That's great news! I took this photo from the Buchanan Cabins side of the River at TX 127 at 9:30 this morning. As you can see, it's passable at this time. The rise this morning is about the same as Monday's, not too bad, but muddied it up again. There are no reports of any more water coming downriver AT THIS TIME. Larry & Helen Burgin of Buchanan Cabins had moved their tube rental tent and equipment away from the River again, but it never got that high. Better safe than sorry.

If you're looking for tube rentals, shuttle, parking, or Frio River access, go visit Larry & Helen at the big white tent at the 1st crossing on TX127. It's a super place at the best swimmin hole on the Frio.

Have fun & be safe! Remember, NO GLASS CONTAINERS ON THE RIVER. If you have ever seen a little one come crying from the River with their feet cut and bleeding from some irresponsible person's broken beer bottle, you know why.

Good News!

It was a great day in Concan, with lots of folks back on the Frio having a fantastic time. The flow is excellent, but the water is still a little murky. I went down to Bunk Falls at about 6:30 this evening, and caught these guys just in time to snap some pics. They made it look easy gliding down the falls, and shot past me like they were lookin for their supper(or maybe cold refreshment?). Does anybody know these swift paddlers?

No need to panic(unless you have a laptop & are camped on the River. If so, ya better h.a.) but...we received word just a few moments ago that another 18 footer is coming down from the headwaters. Both prongs of the Frio above Leakey received a lot of rain today, and here it comes again. I'll head down to the River in the a.m. and get some pics to update yall. If you recall, we had a rise of a little over 18' last Tuesday, and by Thursday, Courtney and her friends were safely tubin again. So let's hope it works out like that again, so all of yall coming this weekend can enjoy yourself.

If you're heading this way in the next couple days, go to the TXDOT website, http://204.64.21.201/travel/road_conditions2.htm for road conditions. If TX 127 is closed due to high water, then instead of taking TX 127 from Sabinal to Concan, proceed west to Uvalde on US 90, then take US 83 to Concan. This will save you a lot of miles if you get to the bridge at Neal's, and find that it's closed.

One more quick story:

A lady who stayed with FrioMan Vacation Lodging(that's us!) a week or so back, called me today. She said she hoped that we had gotten back into our homes ok, and that everything was alright. I asked her what she had heard and OMGoodness! She told me that she heard that we all had been evacuated from our homes in Concan several days ago, last week... something like that, and that we were now back safely in our homes. Wow, I'm glad I slept thru that one, sounds like a doozy!

Please understand, although I joke about what I hear from our guests, and phone calls from potential visitors, I respect the power of floodwaters, and the dangers they impose. Flash flooding on the Frio, or any other river, can be deadly, and warnings from OFFICIALS should be heeded. But, ya gotta admit...rumors start, and we have snowballs in July....funny, funny, funny.

Good afternoon from Concan Texas! As you can see from the photo, we had a small rise this morning of about 6 feet. I took this picture from the second crossing at about 10 a.m. It won't be a good idea to be on the River today, but barring any more rainfall upriver, it should be cleared up and safe again tomorrow. So, let the River do its thing while yall play volleyball, pitch horseshoes, BBQ, shop at Frio's Dry Fifty, or whatever else entertains you. The crossing at TX 127 is open at this time, just in case you're headin our way today. Lunch break is over, so gotta get back to work.

Well, I didn't make it to the River for pictures today...but there's always tomorrow. As has been the case for the last couple of days, the Frio is runnin cool, clear, and perfect. We had a lot of sunshine, mixed with clouds, and it was a super day to enjoy the Hill Country.
Judging from the number of visitors here, it's safe to say everybody doesn't watch (or believe) KENS-5 news out of San Antonio. That's a very good thing because.....their weather guru signed off Thursday or Friday evening telling everyone to "Stay away from the rivers this weekend". HA! If you want the real skinny on what's up at the Frio River in Concan, better tune in to FrioMan's Blog.
Since I don't have any pics from today, I thought you might enjoy checking out some of our locals hangin out at Sundancer earlier this year. There's no place like Concan, Texas.

Well, it's late Thursday night, and I finally got these #%*#! pictures loaded with our slooowww dial-up connection. But we told these nice folks tubing in the pics that we would have them on our blog today, so here they are. Wish I'd have asked where they were from, but they're in Concan on the Frio River havin' a blast and that's all that counts. We took these pictures of the tubers in front of Vista del Rio, and the two dudes fishin' at Seven Bluffs, this afternoon(6-28).

As you can see, the Frio is safe, clear, and conditions are FANTASTIC. So check our website for availability, pick a vacation home that you like, call, book, then hurry up and come join in on the fun.

Frio River during and after rise Tuesday

Hello again from Concan, Texas.
The pictures here are a couple more from Tuesday's flood, to give you folks an idea of how quick the water goes down after a rise. The pic on the left was taken around noon, the other was taken about 7 p.m. that evening. Look closely, and you can just see the log jammed against the tree at water level on the left, whereas it's sitting high in the tree several hours later. These photos were taken at Bunk Falls, located about halfway between the 2nd crossing and the 1st crossing at Neal's. Gotta go now, but I'll be back later with more pics and the latest from the Canyon.

Frio River Flood 6-26-07

Well, FrioMan is finally here to let you know whats going on at the Frio River and in the Concan area. My plans are to keep yall updated on current weather, river conditions, events, who's who, where's what, and whatever else I can help you with.

Sooo...here we go! The night before last, the West prong of the Frio got 5" of rain, the East prong received 8". The result was a rise on the Frio of over 18' here in Concan. However, vacationers rest easy. Contrary to what you hear in the news media, the Frio River is back in it's banks, and clearing rapidly. We even had a lady call and tell us that she heard,(THIS IS FALSE) " The Frio River will be shut down by Sunday because they will be releasing a lot of water from the lake."Lake! What lake? We have no lakes on the Frio River anywhere close, or upriver of us. The river comes up, then goes down almost as fast. I was watching a few tubers who already got back in this morning, but it is always best to wait for the waters to clear completely. If we don't get any more rain, that should happen by sometime tomorrow. It's been a great Summer so far, and this added water will make it fantastic for many weeks to come.
